Guthrie County REC, along with Minburn Communications, have provided critical funding that allows Raccoon Valley Radio to successfully transition to local ownership.

The two rural utility providers matched dollars awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Revolving Loan Fund to complete the financing package. This funding opened the door for longtime station manager John McGee and his wife Jen to purchase the radio group.

John, of Perry, has more than 30 years of experience in the radio industry and has been the general manager of Raccoon Valley Radio since 2012. As the previous owner approached retirement, John saw an opportunity to take KDLS, KGRA and KKRF stations to new heights.

“Jen and I are committed and excited to be in a position to continue serving and growing the communities we’re in,” he said. “We realize the vital role we play in keeping a community committed to its growth and development, as well as providing our clients with the tools and resources they need to grow their businesses.

“This purchase ensures our focus remains on providing authentic, local content that our listeners and local businesses depend on,” John continued. “The support from Minburn Communications and Guthrie County REC was absolutely critical in making this happen. It was really exciting to see local economic development at the grassroots level. Thank you to Minburn Communications, Guthrie County REC and Iowa Area Development Group for helping make this happen."

The financing package also included a Small Business Administration loan facilitated by a local bank. Under John's and Jen's leadership, the radio group will continue to be a key economic driver for the region and a cornerstone of community life.
