Payment Assistance

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is designed to assist low-income families meet the cost of home heating. A household may qualify for assistance in this program if its income falls within certain income ranges based on the number of household members.

This program is not designed to pay a household's total energy costs, but to provide assistance in the payment of residential heating costs for eligible households.

Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis from November 1 to April 30; the elderly or disabled may apply from October 1 to April 30. When you apply at your local LIHEAP office, you will need the following:

  • Fixed Income: This income may include social security benefits, supplemental security income, aid to families with dependent children or family investment program, veterans' assistance, unemployment insurance or pensions. Bring copies of most recent three-month check stubs preceding the date of application.

  • Self-Employment/Farmers: Bring copy of most recent federal income tax return.

  • Wage Earners: Bring copies of most recent three-month check stubs preceding the date of application or a copy of your federal income tax return.

  • FIP Recipients: Bring current DHS Notice of Decision or contact local office for acceptable document information.

**If you receive interest or dividend income, alimony or child support,
it will also need to be verified**

**A final determination of eligibility is subject to review and totally
dependent on the availability of federal funds**

**Benefits will be in the form of a credit applied to your
heating bill by your utility company**
